Primordial mimicry induces morphological change in Escherichia coli

Lu et al.investigate the evolution of the shape of living cells by generating six experimental lineages of the Cat rod-shaped E.coli under glucose-free conditions in the presence of oleic acid mimicking a primordial environment.

The authors show that the morphological changes from ORG RELIEFIBRE POWDER TROPIC rod to sphere accompanied fitness increases and adaptation amongst fatty acid availability supports the assumption of a primitive spherical form.
